History

In the USA, the sport of lawn bowls is governed by the US Lawn Bowling Association. This association has an all volunteer slate of electing officers and councilors. The main forms of communications with members is through the regions and clubs, through Bowls USA magazine and via this website. The officers meet in person at least once a year at their annual board meeting, usually right before the US Open Tournament. Copies of the approved minutes of the meeting may be download from this page (see left margin).

OFFICERS - 2010

Isabella Forbes (Izzie) - President

Izzie started bowling in 1956 at the Essex County LBC in Bloomfield NJ where she served as a board member prior to becoming their first female President. She worked for Prudential Insurance for 20 years before retiring in 2007 and has been a member of Long Beach CA since relocating in 1998. She has previously served as president of the USLBA in 2005 and 2006, and currently also serves on the Women's Selection Committee. Plus she is the games chair for SW Division.

A highly accomplished bowler, Izzie has won multiple local, Division (in the Northeast and Southwest) and US Open titles.  She represented Team USA as a competitor at World Bowls and Asia Pacific as well as the Atlantic Rim in Australia, Fiji, England and Scotland. She has also served as Manager of Team USA in Australia, England, Ireland, and New Zealand.

Marty Schans- Vice President

Marty started bowling in the 1995-1996 season and wishes it had been many years sooner. He has won honors in many Club, Division and National Open events. He has been in the Championships three times from SCD, twice as part of the Pairs team and once in Singles. He is Past President of the Paradise and Lakeview Lawn Bowls Clubs and of the South Central Division. He was elected Councilor in 2005. Marty and his wife Annette have participated in many Division and US Opens and are strong supporters of the sport and the USLBA.

Tom Kees - Secretary

Tom Kees hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was an undergraduate student at Maryville College, and did his graduate work at Fairleigh Dickenson. While in the military Tom served with the United States Army Counter Intelligence Corps. Although his business career varied, it culminated with 35 years with Sears, Roebuck & Co.

Tom is an Elder and a Deacon in his church, and is a Past President of his Lawn Bowling Club. Tom, and his wife Nancy, have three children and six grandchildren.

Brian Studwell - Treasurer

Some of us call Brian "Mr Henselite". Not only is bowls his passion, it is his business too as he is the Henselite distributor for the USA. He belongs to multiple clubs in the L.A. area, has won many bowls trophies, and also serves as treasurer of the SW Division.

IN MEMORIAM

Harold Esch, the only Honorary Life President of the USLBA, passed away recently. He was president of the old American Lawn Bowls Association in 1958-60 and was on the ALBA National Council for 34 years. Only recently did he retire as the USLBA historian.

That kind of service, plus his superb bowling record on the green, made him a charter member of the Lawn Bowls Hall of Fame. Harold was a US champion pairs in 196 and 1967. He bowled in 410 US National Open games, winning 319 of them, which earned him the singles championships twice, the pairs title four times, and the triples twice.

He was secretary-treasure of the North Central Florida League for 40 years. His service to lawn bowling in that role so impressed the Mount Dora club that it made him and Honorary Member in 1954 even though he was a member fo the old Orlando club at the time. After moving to Mount Dora he won all their club tournaments, some more than once. He was club president in 1991-92.
